For many of us, memories of moving without destination, of being focused only on seeking something new, are immutable, clear and dear. Sitting behind the wheel of our car, nothing but the open road and the horizon to focus on, conjures in us the most stirring of memories. They’re often the purest moments we hold. The happiest we have ever been.

I love cars. As soon as I learned what a driving test was, I had been counting down the years until my 17th birthday, and when I could buy my first car. As I grew older, my excitement of that big day never diminished, but I did realise my first car would be an extra special one. So when I turned 17 and learned my stepdad’s old Seat Ibiza commuter car was being handed down to me, a special bond between myself and that car was formed instantly.

I Love You Halfway To The Moon is an intimate exploration of the lived experiences of that beloved Seat Ibiza. It has been in my family from new, so it’s history with us allows a unique narrative to be drawn from the images, as well as the inclusion of archival imagery. The project also touches on commodity fetishism of inanimate objects, as well as the freedom and emotions brought about by being a teenager with a car. The project is presented in an A4 booklet-style photobook.
